My purpose here today…

Dachia- writer, speaker, StorytellerAs you probably know, I spent a great deal of my life in the field of health and wellness. Finding advice on health topics is pretty easy. It’s everywhere. I have been hearing it for 40 years. So, finding the advice is not the problem. Knowing which advice is actually valuable is the key to the rest of your life. Some of the advice you can just intuitively feel is garbage, especially after you have been doing this for nearly 30 years.

Unfortunately, most of the bad advice out there is wrapped in white coats or letters behind a name.  They have DVDs or audio programs, or certainly a book, so they must know what they are talking about. They must be experts… right?

Well, no.

I went through dozens of resources in my beginning years before I started to recognize the fact from fiction. I was like many of you in that I wanted to hear that my bad habits were just fine… or even that they were actually healthy for me.

But the truth is the truth and I had to face facts. I had to make some changes. They would be uncomfortable. They would be hard. Let’s not sugarcoat it, it was going to suck.

There were a few times that I thought I was on the right track and I was so proud of myself and my life would just be scooting right along and then I would look up and realize I had lost track of my goal and had picked up some of my old habits.

For me, the key was and is to keep the goal in front of me at all times. I started reading a particular book and felt motivated to make some changes. I was eating better now. Then when I finished that book, I had another waiting. And that is what I need to do to stay on track. I had horrible eating habits for many years as I was growing up. It is not reasonable for me to think that all I need to do is simply know what to do and then I’ll just do it… forever… with no backsliding.

I’m not that person. I need to keep my goal in front of me all the time. Books, videos, articles… whatever I can find.

That is what works for me. Through a great deal of trial and error I can now recognize good information quickly and can click out of an article without wasting any more time than necessary before determining it is junk.

My purpose here today is to encourage you, to guide you, to figure out what you need to stay the course to the life you seek. The course to purpose and self-actualization. Do you need posters? Then surround yourself with posters? Books? Videos. Inspirational or informative emails arriving in your inbox each morning? If you do not know what you need then just start trying stuff. Put a poster up and see if it makes you feel good and powerful and motivated to achieve your purpose. Sign up for some online newsletters. Join a mastermind.
